Osmosis
In figure A below, under normal pressure water will pass from the side of the membranes with lower concentration to the side with the higher concentration to reach equilibrium. (see figure B) |
Equilibrium
Osmotic Pressure is the pressure required to stop water flow and reach equilibrium. When the applied pressure equals the osmotic pressure, the water flow stops. When applied pressure exceeds the osmotic pressure, reverse osmosis will take place. In reverse osmosis, water passes through the membrane to the dilute solution, leaving behind dissolved particles. This process purifies the water, often reducing total dissolved solids content by 99%. |
Reverse Osmosis
Ecologix RO Systems use semi-permeable spiral wound, thin film membranes to separate and remove dissolved solids, organic material, pyrogens, submicron colloidal matter, viruses, and bacteria from water. Feed water is delivered under pressure to the membranes, where reverse osmosis takes place. Water permeates the minute pores of the membrane and is delivered as purfied product water. The impurities in the water do not pass through the membrane, and are instead concentrated in the reject stream that is flushed to the drain. |

The diagram to the far left shows the layers used to construct a typical RO Element. It also shows the flow of the water and how it permeates through the element. To the right is a photograph of a cut-out cross section of an RO element. |

Reverse Osmosis (RO) removes up to 99.8% of the chemicals in the water. This means that arsenic, cyanide, chrome, copper, nickel and other ions are greatly reduced. In addition, water hardness in reverse osmosis is also removed which eliminates lime scale formation on bath fixtures, in pipes and in the water heater. Most water heaters fail due to calcium buildup on the heater elements, reverse osmosis will eliminate that method of failure.
With Reverse Osmosis water, dishwashers last longer, and dishes rinse spot free. The scale that builds up on showers and bath fixtures is eliminated. Water tastes better and is better for you.
WHAT IS REVERSE OSMOSIS?
Reverse Osmosis is a membrane filtration process where water under pressure is forced through very small pores in the membrane and the dissolved chemicals are left on the pressure side of the membrane.
Reverse Osmosis works by using pressure to force the water through a membrane retaining the dissolved chemicals on one side and
allowing the pure water to pass to the other side.
This is the reverse of the normal osmosis process, which is the natural
movement of a solvent from an area of low solute concentration, through
a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration when no external
pressure is applied.
The membranes used for reverse osmosis have a dense barrier layer in the polymer matrix where most separation occurs. This filters need to be changed once a month & the membrane could last up to 5 years, with consistent changing of the filters.
A Reverse Osmosis system will get you drinking water ( BETTER THAN BOTTLED WATER) throughout your Entire home.
