For approximately 150 years, chlorine has been a vital, yet dan
gerous part of our tap water. Water chlorination first began as a way to combat deadly waterborne diseases . Just as it kills bacteria and viruses in drinking water, it kills or damages cells within the human body. Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes which are carcinogens resulting from the combination of chlorine with compounds in water. Chlorine is being absorbed into our skin every time we shower, as well as we inhale chlorine fumes being released into the air.
HARDNESS
Hard water is water that has high mineral content mainly calcium and magnesium as well as other dissolved compounds such as bicarbonates and sulfates. These minerals have a wide impact on households. Hard water interferes with almost every cleaning task from laundering and dishwashing to bathing and personal grooming. Clothes laundered in hard water may look dingy and feel harsh and scratchy. Dishes and glasses washed in hard water may be spotted on drying. Hard water may cause a film on glass shower doors, sho
wer walls and bathtubs. Hair washed in hard water may feel sticky and look dull. Hard water also contributes to inefficient and costly operation of water-using appliances.
